Evelyn Pultarra
Evelyn was born at Woodgreen Station in the Utopia Homelands circa 1940.She is an Anmatyerre woman and the mother of 6 children. She shares the same paint totem as her brother Greeny Purvis and her late aunt, Emily Knangwarryre. This is the "Bush Yam" or "Pencil Yam" which is a native plant with edible roots. She began painting in 1997 and employs explosive colour, in a variety of styles, to depict her country. In August 2005, she won the Telstra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Award for excellence in painting. She has had solo exhibitions in Sydney and Milan and she is considered to be an "emerging artist" whose work is not yet to be found in major public collections.
