Gertie Huddleston
Gertie comes from the Roper River area in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Territory. She was a champion needleworker before starting to paint in 1984 and this is evidenced in her detailed, intricate painting style, which is so different to the styles of Northeast Arnhamland and the Central Desert. Her landscapes are crammed with vegetation, animals and flowers and are a depiction of the two different ways of life she has lived. Both in the bush, and then, as a young girl on the Roper River Mission where she planted exotic vegetables and flowers in orderly rows. She has been widely exhibited and collected throughout Australia.
