Gloria Petyarre
Gloria was born around 1945 in Utopia.Her language is Anmatyerre and her country Aknangkere. She is one of seven sisters who are also well known artists. She began painting on canvas in 1988 after having started working in the medium of Batik. In 1990-91 she travelled to Ireland, London, India and had her first solo exhibition in New York. She has since had several major exhibitions throughout the country. In 1995/96 she received a Full Fellowship grant from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Board of the Australia Council, and in March 1999 won the Wynne Prize. Gloria's main Dreamings are "Mountain Devil", "Bush Medicine" and "Aknangkere Growth" Her paintings are rich in texture and layering and have a unique feeling of movement and depth. Gloria is represented in all of the major Public Art Galleries in Australia and is widely collected both in Australia and internationally
